This black transfer faience wall plate, titled Renard Surpris (“Startled Fox”), depicts a huntsman and his hounds catching sight of a fox as it breaks from cover, a familiar motif in nineteenth century sporting art. A basketweave border frames the vignette in soft relief.
Made by Saint Amand et Hamage in northern France, the piece reflects the enduring artistry of a manufactory whose roots trace to the early eighteenth century. By the late 1800s, Saint Amand had become one of the country’s premier faience producers, celebrated for its finely printed pastoral and hunting scenes.
Glazed to a warm ivory tone and delicately crazed with age, this plate reflects the refined elegance of turn of the century French ceramics, ideal for wall display or as part of a collection alongside its companion, the Canard Wall Plate.
