This blue and white faience planter by Gien features a neoclassical mask motif framed by scrolling foliage and patterned borders, printed in deep cobalt transfer. Its rounded form and hand pierced drainage hole suggest it was designed for use as a cachepot or indoor jardinière.
The pattern dates to around 1866 and it exemplifies Gien’s Renaissance inspired production. Ornate yet balanced, it's the fine cobalt detailing and creamy glaze that made the manufactory one of France’s most esteemed potteries.
The base of this pot bears Gien’s three tower mark along with impressed A and 00 stamps, both consistent with mid nineteenth century manufacture. The planter shows light surface wear, fine age related crazing, and a stable interior crack, consistent with age and use. Please review all photos before purchasing.
Sourced just outside Paris from a longtime collector, this beautiful piece stands as both a functional vessel and a testament to the artistry of nineteenth century Gien ceramics.
